My Daughter Is Sick and It’s Scary

Kaitlyn has come down with some kind of virus. She’s on her second day of running a high fever (above 102 degrees) and vomiting.

It’s scary. No matter how many kids we have, it’s scary every single time. There’s no getting used to a usually happy, bouncy kid suddenly just laying there, burning up.

I am so grateful for my friends on Facebook. I’ve been updating on my Wall and getting lots of supportive and helpful comments. Kaitlyn was throwing up sips of water, so on the advice of another Mom, I switched to feeding her apple juice from a teaspoon, waiting 10 seconds or so between sips, and so far, it’s staying down.

You’d think I’d be an expert after three kids, but every kid is different. When Ryan was little, he would get sick and still be bouncing around the house.

Kaitlyn wants a folded cold washcloth on her forehead with a few ice chips in the fold. She wants a sheet over her and she wants a big plastic bowl within reach just in case she throws up. And she wants those spoonfuls of apple juice.

So that’s what I’m doing today, spoon-feeding apple juice and running a washcloth under cold water. I’m giving her children’s Tylenol every four hours on the advice of the nurse at the pediatrician’s office. I’m updating Facebook and IM’ing my husband. That’s my day today.

I’m a Mom of a sick little girl today.

Another Sick Day and Alice in Wonderland on Blu-Ray

It started with Kaitlyn and a runny nose last Friday. By Sunday, Ryan had a heavy cough and I had a completely stuffed up nose. I kept Ryan home from school yesterday, and then again today when I heard him still coughing.

I hate being sick. I hate having to constantly blow my nose. I can’t find any hand sanitizer and I don’t have the car to go get some, so I wash my hands about 20 times a day which is making my hands dry.

Waaaahhh, poor me.

I’m up to 36 comments on my 44th birthday post! If you haven’t left a comment there yet, won’t you please do so?  I’d really love to see 44 comments :)

So, there’s the blizzard coming. The news said to expect 40 mile an hour winds and 10 to 18 inches of snow. I had planned to go to the grocery store today to stock up in case we’re snowed in tomorrow, and then Chris’ coworker who drives carpool called in sick, so Chris had to take the car.

I checked the pantry – there’s a couple of big cans of soup, some diced tomatoes, and corn muffin mix. I’m sure I can do *something* with that.  Chris is going to try to get to the store after work, I’m nervous about him driving in the first place but he can’t exactly call in sick because there might be a lot of snow AFTER work, you know?  I’ll just be biting my nails until he pulls in the driveway.

Ryan and I are bundled under blankets, me with my box of tissues (and a steadily growing pile of crumpled up used ones, I should really get a wastebasket) and him trying to be a tough guy but really feeling pretty miserable, while Kaitlyn bops around the house.  I can hear her in her room playing, making up some story for her My Little Ponies or something, she puts a smile on my face.

We’re watching the original Alice In Wonderland, it’s come out on Blu-Ray in a 60th anniversary edition. Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment sent it to me for review, and do I recommend you buy it? HECK YES.  The  transfer looks amazing, every color is bright and vivid.  There are two versions you can buy, one is the Blu-Ray + DVD combo pack that I got, it’s $19.99 on Amazon. The other adds a third Digital Copy disc and bumps the price up to $27.99.  I was surprised by how much Ryan enjoyed it!

So that’s what’s going on around here. I don’t feel like getting up and doing anything, so I’m just going to keep writing blog posts.  And if somebody could just send me a new nose to replace this leaking one, that would be great.

At least I’m not throwing up

Last Saturday night we went to the Ringling Bros. Circus at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids. We had a great time. Sunday morning, my husband felt sick, with a stuffed up nose and a bad headache, and he was extremely tired. He slept most of the day. Sunday night, Nathan felt sick, throwing up several times. He stayed home from school Monday and spent most of it on the couch in the back room sleeping. When Nathan needs to sleep all day, he is really sick. By Tuesday morning he was fine. Tuesday evening I started to feel a bad headache coming on and I was really tired. I got into bed at 8:00 pm and didn’t get up until yesterday morning.

Yesterday afternoon, Kaitlyn woke up from her nap burning hot. I put her on the couch in the living room with a cup of water and a straw for sipping, and a DVD to watch. She got up, walked a few steps, and threw up. Three times. I cleaned it up, put her back on the couch, more water to sip. She threw up again. Three more times. Clean up, tiny sip of water, back to the couch. Chris came home, helped me give her some Ibuprofen, then went to Subway for sandwiches for dinner. Within about 30 minutes, Kaitlyn claimed she felt better and wanted to eat. I went up to the store and got a yogurt (probiotics for regulating digestion) and a can of Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup. She ate a few spoonfuls of yogurt and it stayed down. We both went to bed at 9:00.

This morning she was once again burning hot, whining, acting kind of out of it. I got her to sip some diluted apple juice and gave her some Ibuprofen. When her fever went down, she ate a few bites of cereal. And threw some of it back up. Of course. Clean up, change the nightgown, sip of water. Now she claims to feel great and would like to know if she can have a hot dog for lunch. Um, NO. Because there’s no way I’m cleaning that up if it comes back up. Ugh.

I’m so tired. I have a stuffy nose and my ears are both clogged shut, and I just want to get back in bed. We’re supposed to have a garage sale on Saturday with the rest of our neighborhood, and I’m supposed to be in the basement making a sale pile. But I don’t wanna. I wanna SLEEP. I want someone to bring me juice in a cup with a straw and turn my pillow to the cool side. I want someone to put my favorite movies in the DVD player. I don’t want to be the responsible one today. Waaah.
